Smokeless tobacco contains 28 different chemicals (carcinogens) that can cause cancer. It contain more of nicotine than smoked tobacco products which makes it highly addictive as cigarettes. When a smoker chews tobacco in it smokeless form, he absorbs four times as much nicotine as he would from smoking a cigarette. Sucking and chewing smokeless tobacco allows nicotine to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the tissues in the smoker's mouth and it stays there for longer time.
Health problems related to smokeless tobacco:
*. Tooth decay: Chewing tobacco and other forms of smokeless tobacco causes tooth decay. This is because chewing tobacco contains high amounts of sugar and contributes to dental caries.
*. Damage gums: Smokeless tobacco causes the gums to pull away from the teeth and also causes gum disease (gingivitis).
*. Tooth discoloration: It makes the teeth yellowish, black or brownish in colour.
*. Bad breath: No matter how much you brush or flush, bad breath will always emanate from the body as long as you use tobacco.
*. Tooth abrasion: It can destroys the enamel.
*. Cancer: It increases the risk of certain types of cancer (pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, larynx, stomach and other types of oral cancer, including cancer of the mouth and throat).
*. Heart disease: Smokeless tobacco increases the heart rate and blood pressure. This can result to heart disease and stroke which may eventually lead to death.
To sum up, smokeless tobacco should never be considered a safe substitute for cigarettes. It does not and can never help smokers quit smoking. The addictive nature of tobacco ensures that the smoker is trapped in the habit. Remember smokers are liable to die young. This entails whether you used smoked tobacco or smokeless tobacco.
Thanks for the article. It is such an eye opener. Great work #Admin.
ReplyDeleteThank you for dispelling the belief that smokeless tobacco is safer than cigarettes. I sounds like it is just as bad and should definitely be avoided.
ReplyDeleteI quit smoking years ago so whether it's touted as smokeless tobacco or anything else, I would not go near it. Not smoking it and preferring smoke-free public locations over any that say you can smoke.
ReplyDeleteYour post is so valuable.
Good to know you quit smoking. If other too who are trapped in this habit can also quit.
ReplyDeleteI use smokeless tobacco. When I started smokeless tobacco was advertised as a safe alternative to smoking. I think I would have had an easier time quitting smoking than using snuff, Now it goes directly to my blood stream.
ReplyDeleteDoes this also apply to ecigarettes?
ReplyDeleteIt does. Find out why here http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/314896/lifestyle/healthandwellness/fda-second-hand-smoke-from-e-cigarettes-may-be-harmful-to-your-health
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of smokeless tobacco before today. Seems like it should be good for you no matter what it's called. If doesn't make sense then it's probably not a great thing to put in your body.
ReplyDeleteGreat article...it's good to have this kind of information as most people would just assume that smoke less tobacco would be safe!

Nice Write up @Mazino
ReplyDeleteLike so many I quit smoking many years ago. Even though they say it's smokeless tobacco, I would be afraid to go near it. Why, I would be afraid it would lure me back to smoking again. Regardless, from what you've said neither are very good for you. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy son used to chew tobacco when he was 16. It was a phase he went through, and a disgusting one, at that! I warned him of damage to his teeth. Finally he gave it up.
ReplyDeleteHe's 24 now, and his gums are not in the best shape but he's improving his oral care by regular flossing. He also uses mouthwash. Of course, he's always brushed his teeth. :) But now he's more conscious of the potential problems, and will never use smokeless tobacco again. Thank goodness for that! I'm sure his girlfriend would hate to kiss his mouth if he did.
Chewing tobacco is terrible! I remember the videos we'd be forced to watch in school that'd show some famous athlete who lost his jaw because of years chewing tobacco. Really opened my eyes. I tried it but it never caught on. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteI quit smoking about 5 years ago and am so glad I did. Great info you've shared!
