Herbs are natural hence many believe it is safer than modern pharmaceutical drugs. It is wrong to believe that because a product is natural means it is safe. So one need to exercise cautions when considering herbal remedies. They can cause harm in their own little ways. Chemical compounds found in herbs can change heart rate, elevate blood pressure and glucose level. Moreso they can make one dizzy and cause nausea. It is strongly advised that people having heart problem, high blood pressure, or high glucose level should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before undergoing any herbal regimen. Herbs can be effective in treating an ailment but can also trigger allergic reactions. For example, ephedra is a herb taken for weight loss, but the herb can also elevate blood pressure.
Just like pharmaceutical drugs, herbal medicine have recommended dosage. Yes they are natural products but moderation is the key to limit any side effects. Another rule of safety when taking herbs, is never to combine it with orthodox medicine. They may cause adverse reaction or even reduce the efficacy of the drug. Bottom line is, if you are taking any prescription drug, consult your healthcare provider before taking herbs. Your health is your responsibility!
Herbs are truly efficacious in dealing with some ailments but the abuse of herbs can be totally dangerous. It could result to renal failure and other medical consequences.
ReplyDeleteUsers should consult a professional healthcare provider before using herbs as most are not properly prescribed by the 'botanical doctors'.

ReplyDeleteAny kind of medicine has to be taken with caution. There are side effects. So, when taking a new medication, it is important to tell your pharmacist about all kind of natural, herbal and other meds you are taking.
Great advice on herbal medicine Mazino. Having grown up in Africa and in rural parts where people rely a lot on these remedies, I can testify to the use of these to this day, with the major concerns being dosages. Interestingly, many an old timer in Africa will know the exact dosage required with these wild herbs. My grandfather for one was very good at going into the bush returning with an instant cure for ailments. Sadly the knowledge has not been passed down.
ReplyDeletePeople do forget about dosage with natural remedies or herbs. Not everything in nature is safe, tobacco and hemlock are natural, but they are not safe.
ReplyDeletePeople assume "natural" means harmless. When they do, they ignore the recommended dosage on these natural supplements. Not everything "natural' is all that safe. There are many examples of that in the natural world. We could do well be become more informed. :-)
ReplyDeleteVery true that everything works, as long as it's in moderation. Herbal remedies are to be trusted but also feared, like you say. This was a very informative and thought-provoking post. Sharing this one.
ReplyDeleteVery informative post. By the grace of God I do not have any serious health problems and try to be my doctor always. I think that natural medicine taken in right quantity can be helpful. It is same for natural or chemical but I believe that some times natural medicines have more side effects than chemical. As I have an aunt in family and she was suffering from knees pain from long time someone told her to use natural remedies , when she started dosage of natural medicine she started feeling better but slowly slowly when it started getting more she increased the dose without consultation and the result is she can not walk and on wheel chair from more than 10 years. Alas! So we must be careful while taking medicine as some herbs have worst side effects or long lasting.
ReplyDeleteI use herbs for natural healing but with caution. I have had great success using natural remedies and have incorporated them into my everyday life.
