What Really Causes Stretch Marks

Do you have stretch marks? Not everyone can say a "NO" to the question. Nevertheless, if you have stretch marks, it is not a painful skin problem that poses any health risks. For those who are free from it, stretch marks are not contagious. So you won't get it by mere body to body contact. Stretch marks can have a bit of social effects on the victim if  the affected areas are so visible and widespread. Although more common in females, stretch marks is not a feminine thing, it also affect males. They can appear in any parts of the body but are more common in the breasts, thighs, groin, hips, butt and abdomen.

Known Causes Of Stretch Marks

The skin is made of up 3 layers. The epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. Dermis is the layer that maintain and retain the shape of the skin. When the dermis become stretched and collagen which is the elastic supportive tissue is affected, it results to stretch marks. The skin around the body has its elastic limit. When the body increases in size, the skin stretches to fit around the new body size. This is why stretch marks can often be seen in men who are into bodybuilding. The skin tend to accommodate the new increased body size by stretching to fit. This is also the case for some pregnant women, the tummy increases in size and stretches the skin around the area to fit.

There are other factors responsible for the appearance of stretch marks. They are listed below.

  • Hormonal changes
  • Genetics
  • Rapid weight gain (obesity)
  • Poor diet
  • Puberty
  • Use of oral or topical corticosteroids
  • Use of topical steroids
  • Adrenal gland disease

  1. I once told a friend of mine that has stretch mark that its because he's into bodybuilding but he didnt believe me. So am right?

  2. I certainly acquired a few stretch marks during pregnancy although I didn't gain more than a "healthy" amount of weight and returned to my pre-pregnancy weight fairly quickly after giving birth two times. As you say, I think they're pretty much unavoidable if you have the right preconditions. The good news is that along with the stretch marks, I also acquired two healthy babies----so it's all good.

    1. I'm glad you took the positives: your two healthy babies. One thing to reduce the appearance of stretch marks during pregnancy is never to scratch them.

  3. Not something I have ever had an issue with but it is interesting to learn what causes stretch marks.

  4. Stretch marks dont really look good on anyone skin. For women who are pregnant, they should try seeing a skin doctor to help them on the isse of stretch marks.

  5. We usually hear about stretch marks in the context of pregnant women. I hadn't realized men could get them too, but it makes sense if they are related to increase in body size and shape.

    1. Men too do have stretch marks but mostly in those who are into bodybuilding.

  6. I know from firsthand about stretch marks and body building. I do also know that in many cases, like myself, it was due to “Bulking Up”. This is where we get stronger and bigger, without being concerned about fat %. We try to get a large as possible, then diet down to a leaner physique, hoping a majority of muscle mass we gained, is not loss in that diet process.
This means of getting big is no longer favorable in the body building community. I believe the cause of the stress marks is not from the muscles being built, but the extra fat we are carrying to get that mass.

  7. Nice one Mazino..
